Winter Olympics - Milano Cortina 2026

Olympic Freestyle skiing at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics is set to showcase the sport's exciting evolution. With the addition of new events and growing global talent, the competition promises to be thrilling. Anticipation is high for both veteran athletes and emerging stars as they prepare to compete on a global stage in Italy's picturesque winter landscape.

Since its debut in the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics, Olympic Freestyle Skiing has become a highlight of the Games. The inaugural event saw Canada’s Jean-Luc Brassard win the Men’s Mogul and U.S. athletes Donna Weinbrecht and Scott Brooksbank take gold in the Women’s Mogul and Men’s Aerials, respectively. In the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics Games, Canadian Nicolas Fontaine and U.S. skier Heidi Smith continued the trend, showcasing the sport's growing appeal.

The 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics introduced new disciplines like Halfpipe, with the U.S. and Canada emerging as dominant forces. By the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games, the U.S. team, led by Tanner Hall and Sarah Burke, excelled in Halfpipe, while Canada’s Alexandre Bilodeau won gold in Mogul skiing. The 2006 Torino Olympics saw the rise of new stars, including Canada’s Alexandre Bilodeau and U.S. skier Hannah Kearney. The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games were marked by U.S. dominance in Halfpipe, with Hannah Kearney winning the Women’s Mogul and Switzerland’s Simon Dumont and Sarah Burke claiming Halfpipe golds.

The 2014 Sochi Olympics continued this trend with Maddie Bowman and David Wise winning in Halfpipe for the U.S., and Canada’s Justine Dufour-Lapointe and Alex Bilodeau excelling in Mogul skiing. Most recently, the 2018 PyeongChang Games highlighted the prowess of U.S. skiers Chloe Kim and David Wise in Halfpipe, while Canada’s Mikael Kingsbury and Kazakhstan’s Yulia Galysheva clinched gold in Mogul skiing. Over the years, freestyle skiing has evolved with innovations in technique and equipment, continuing to captivate audiences with its spectacular displays of skill and athleticism.
