Winter Olympics - Milano Cortina 2026

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics is set to feature the Olympic Luge events at the Cortina d’Ampezzo Olympic Sliding Centre. Expect fierce competition, with traditional powerhouses like Germany and Italy aiming for podium finishes, and emerging teams looking to make a mark. The event will continue to showcase the precision and speed of the Olympic Luge, promising thrilling races and new Olympic heroes.

Over the past three decades, the Olympic Luge has been shaped by Germany's athletes, who have consistently excelled in the sport. At the 1994 Lillehammer Games, Germany’s Georg Hackl and Sylke Otto made their mark by winning gold in the men’s and women’s singles events, respectively. This performance set the stage for Germany’s continued dominance in the sport.

In the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, Italy’s Armin Zoggeler broke Germany's winning streak by clinching gold in the men’s singles. Meanwhile, Germany's Sylke Otto defended her title in the women’s singles, demonstrating the strength of German competitors. The 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games further highlighted Zoggeler’s prowess as he secured another gold in the men’s singles, while Germany’s Sandra Kiriasis won gold in the women’s event.

The 2006 Torino Winter Olympics continued the trend with Germany's Felix Loch capturing gold in the men’s singles and Sandra Kiriasis successfully defending her title in the women’s event. This era saw the rise of Loch, who would become a central figure in the sport. At the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Games, Loch continued his dominance, winning gold, and Natalie Geisenberger achieved gold in the women’s singles.

The 2014 Sochi Olympic Games saw Loch and Geisenberger repeating their gold medal performances, solidifying their legacies. In the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, Loch earned his third consecutive gold in the men’s singles, and Geisenberger secured her third straight gold in the women’s singles, underlining Germany's remarkable consistency in the sport.

The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games upheld this tradition, with Johannes Ludwig and Natalie Geisenberger earning gold in their respective categories. The German doubles teams also performed exceptionally, further demonstrating Germany's continued dominance in the Olympic Luge. This period highlights the exceptional achievements of individual athletes like Zoggeler and Loch and underscores Germany's ongoing strength in the sport.
