Winter Olympics - Milano Cortina 2026

Olympic Skeleton, a high-speed winter Olympic sport where athletes race headfirst down a narrow, one-person sled, has been a thrilling part of the Winter Olympics since its return in 2002. Over the past two decades, the sport has seen various countries dominate the podium. In the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, Geoffery Bodine from the USA won the men's gold, while Kazimiera Rudzinska from Poland claimed the women’s title. The 2006 Torino Olympics saw Duff Gibson from Canada and Anja Schneiderheinze from Germany take the top spots. Moving to the 2010 Vancouver Games, Jon Montgomery of Canada and Amy Williams of Great Britain emerged as gold medalists.

The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics were notable for Alexsandr Tretyakov from Russia and Elizabeth Yarnold from Great Britain winning the men’s and women’s gold medals, respectively. The 2018 Pyeongchang Games highlighted Yun Sung-bin from South Korea and Elizabeth Yarnold again, with Yarnold becoming a two-time Olympic champion. Most recently, at the 2022 Beijing Games, Christopher Grotheer of Germany and Hannah Neise of Germany won the gold medals in men’s and women’s skeleton, respectively. Germany has emerged as the dominant nation in recent years, with strong performances contributing to its leading medal count in the sport.

The 2026 Winter Olympics, scheduled to be held in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, promises to be an exciting event, marking the return of the Games to Italy since the Torino 2006 Olympics. From February 6 to February 22, 2026, the Games will feature 15 sports across seven disciplines, including skiing, snowboarding, and various ice sports. Events will be hosted not only in Milan and Cortina but also in other Italian cities such as Trento and Bormio.

Olympic Skeleton will again be a featured event, continuing its tradition as a staple of the Winter Games. With Italy’s rich winter sports heritage, there is considerable anticipation for the competition, which is expected to showcase strong performances from traditional powerhouses like Germany, Canada, and the UK. The Games in Milano-Cortina 2026 are expected to bring new records and highlight emerging talent, making for a memorable and competitive winter sports festival.
